Description

Five evaluation trenches (76m in total x 1.8m wide) were excavated by Colchester Archaeological Trust in June 2014 in advance of eight new class-bases, a play area, and expanded car parks on parts of the playing field and parking area. <1> The evaluation revealed no Late Iron Age or Roman remains but did identify a wide N-S aligned modern ditch F1, at the east of of Trench 4, that it is almost certainly of military origin. The fill contained modern material including ash, modern brick and peg-tile fragments and barbed wire. It may be a continuation of the WWII anti-tank ditch, forming part of the Colchester stop line, excavated on Garrison Area 10 (1km to the north-east), in 2003 (CAT report 292). <2>
