In November 2012 Archaeological Solutions Limited (AS) carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land at Colchester Skip Hire, Greenacres, Old Packards Lane, Wormingford (NGR TL 93458 30397). The evaluation was commissioned by The Johnson Dennehy Planning Partnership on behalf of Colchester Skip Hire, and undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning approval for the construction of a new waste recycling facility (Planning Ref. ESS/13/11/COL), and to a brief issued by Essex CC. Twenty one trenches, each 40m x 1.8m were therefore proposed. Given practical access difficulties, however, trenches within the operation part of the site could not be excavated. The first phase of trenches were excavated in currently accessible area - 14 trenches within the southern sector of the site (Trenches 1 - 7, 12 – 16 and 20 – 21). No archaeological features or finds were revealed in any of the trial trenches.<1>
