Description

Colchester Archaeological Trust excavated four 1m x 0.5m test pits, one in each corner of the proposed new PlayFootball sports pitches on the north-east side of St Helena School (within current sports pitches). <1> One of the test pits was within the Scheduled Area (NHLE 1002173). The aim of the test pits was to establish the level at which archaeological remains were present – the ‘archaeological level’, in order to inform the design of the sports pitches. Although there were Roman finds in the topsoil in each test pit, there were no archaeological features. Working clockwise from NW to SE, the ‘archaeological level’ in the four TPs was 540mm, 580mm, unclear, and 550mm respectively below present ground level.
