Description

Archaeology South-East undertook a trial trenched evaluation at Coopers Beach Holiday Park, Church Lane, East Mersea. The pre-determination work was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of an extension to the holiday park consisting of 60 holiday lodges along with associated roadways, parking and other infrastructure (CBC planning application 150383). At the time of the evaluation, the site comprised an area of overgrown scrub to the west of the existing holiday park. Nine trial trenches (each 30m long x 1.80m wide) were excavated, within the areas of the proposed roadways. No features or finds of archaeological interest were revealed. Modern dumping was observed in Trenches 2 and 7 but no other disturbance was recorded. It was concluded that the lack of archaeological remains indicates very low potential for the presence of archaeological remains of any period across the site.
