The Topfield site lies to the west of the walled Roman town, west of the former St Mary’s Hospital site (now the Balkerne Heights residential development), where Roman burials and domestic activity have been recorded. The Phase II development site (plots 5-8) is a triangular-shaped parcel of land approximately 80m long and 25m wide at its widest point. <1> The triangular parcel of land to the north of the Phase II site was developed as Topfield Phase I, plots 1-4 were investigated as Phase I, CAT Reports 134 and 423. <2><3> Based on the results of the Phase II evaluation in 2007 (CAT Report 429), and Phase 1 investigation (in 2006/7), it was deemed that there was a sufficiently deep accumulation of topsoil on the site to protect archaeological remains from development, with a watching brief durin gthe groundworks (a possible metalled road or trackway was defined in T1, c.0.9-1.0m bgl; a post Roman dark earth was defined 250mm bgl. A large quarry pit was defined in T2). <2><3><4> The 2008 watching brief has produced a relatively large group of Roman pottery sherds (slightly over 2kg), which is almost certainly domestic waste from a nearby Roman occupation site. The pottery spans the 2nd century to the 4th century, but none of the sherds need necessarily be later than the mid-late 3rd century.
