Description
During April 2008, Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological trial trenched evaluation to locate potential archaeological features identified during a geophysical survey. The evaluation was undertaken within Phase 4 of the residential development at the former Flakt Woods Factory site, Colchester (NGR TL 9820 2665).
Despite the potential for late Iron Age remains and evidence of extra-mural activity to the north-west of the Roman town, no archaeological features or finds were present. Archaeological monitoring and recording by AS during earlier phases of the development recorded only modern made ground intended to provide a level surface for building works. The current evaluation trenches encountered a topsoil layer which was removed to reveal the clay natural.<1>
