Description

A trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in January 2007 on a site (c.5ha. in size) to the south of the Roman Way Camp and west of the Berechurch Dyke, Colchester Garrison (Alienated Land redevelopment Area S2 south), Colchester. Although trial-trenching had previously been undertaken in advance of outline planning permission in 2002 (Stage 1a) on most of the Taylor Woodrow Alienated Land parcels, it was not possible to undertake trenching in this particular area. <1> The 15 trial trenches (T12-26) revealed a number of prehistoric, Roman and post-medieval ditches. All recorded features in the trench descriptions below were sealed by a buried topsoil (L2), which was in turn sealed by sealed by a thick modern topsoil (L1), and all features cut natural glacial sands and gravels (L3). The ditches were on three different alignments, and appeared to represent fragments of three distinct landscapes. The first field system, dating to the Early or Middle Iron Age, was aligned WNW-ESE. The Iron Age landscape was overlaid by a second field system consisting of ditches aligned slightly west of N-S. Dated material from these ditches is Roman, making the field system late Iron Age or Roman. The author suggests the field system is likely to be associated with the early years of the oppidum of Camulodunum, one of the defensive lines of which (Berechurch Dyke) runs along the edge of Area S2 (south). Later, a third field system is evidenced by a series of post-medieval ditches containing peg-tile and glass. The ditches representing the Iron Age and Roman field systems were mainly to be seen on the western and eastern edges of the evaluation site, the central part of the evaluation site apparently being a blank in archaeological terms. The other excavated features, i.e. a small number of pits and post-holes, were more apparent on the eastern side of the site. The post-holes may represent structures such as buildings or fences, not fully visible in the evaluation trenches, and the pits may represent domestic activity on or around those buildings or structures. <1> Four areas (0.5 ha. in size) were identified for further investigation or excavation (Areas A to D) in February/March 2007 (ECC2754). <2>
