Description

A small magnetic survey was carried out with the object of determining whether the Roman road running from Colchester town to Gosbecks that is known through aerial photographs could be found where it crosses Oliver’s Lane, and enters the park parallel with the Roman theatre. Eight 20 by 20m squares were set up around marker point 22 on the park grid. Each square was surveyed at a density of 0.5m x 1m, and downloaded to a laptop computer running the InSite archaeological programme. The target Roman road can be seen as its ditches, running NE-SW through grid point 22. The road ditches are only visible for a short section, and at this point are approximately 6m apart. Two linear features, probably field boundaries, are also visible, and these accord with the evidence from aerial photographs. Large anomalies occur in two lines running NW-SE, which could be large pits, although it seems strange that they are in line with one another. Evidence of the Roman road was found at grid point 22. Other features show evidence of occupation and further surveys should be carried out in this part of the Archaeological Park. <1> NB. No source or location (grid ref) is given for this Event record.
