Description
In January 2005, Archaeological Solutions Ltd conducted a trial-trenched archaeological evaluation at the proposed orangutan enclosure, Colchester Zoo, Stanway, Colchester. The site is adjacent to the ruins of the 13th century All Saints Church and within the grounds of the former manorial complex of the 15th century Stanway Hall.
Two trial trenches, one measuring 30m and one measuring 10m in length, were excavated on site. A series of large pits and ditches dating to the medieval period were excavated on the northern side of the site. Fourteen graves were located across the site with an associated graveyard soil containing disarticulated human bone in the southern part of the site, close to the church itself. The graves were left in situ at this evaluation stage. <1>
An archaeological excavation was subsequently carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in September 2005. CAT excavated 34 medieval inhumation graves on the site of the proposed new orang-utan enclosure. <2>
