Description
A geophysical survey undertaken by Peter Cott confirmed the position of a rectangular crop mark site west of Westhouse Farm (now the Lexden Wood Golf Club). A small trench (2 x 5m in size) was excavated by hand in January 2000 within the footprint of the proposed new building, inside the cropmark enclosure, at the Lexden Wood Golf Club. The trench failed to reveal any internal features, but finds of Middle Iron Age and Roman pottery confirm the general date range within which the crop mark site is likely to fall. As the proposed development lies within the crop mark enclosure, there is still the potential for prehistoric and/or Roman remains to be disturbed. <1>
