Description

Watching brief carried out during the machine excavation of a trench dug to expose a sewer adjacent to a raised manhole. The manhole was located on the northern side of Hilly Fields, at the bottom of the slope, in a wooded area - exact location unknown. The trench was dug to the east of the manhole and was 1.4m wide, 2m long and 800mm deep. 300mm of topsoil was removed to expose light grey brown sandy loam subsoil. However, most of the subsoil had previously been cut away by the sewer-trench which was filled with mixed orange and buff-coloured compact slightly clayey silt. The top of the sewer was recorded at 800mm below ground level. Roman tile occurred residually within the backfill of the sewer-trench. No features were recorded. <1>
