Description
Watching briefs on machine excavations for a new freshwater lake (TL 97090 14020) and a counter wall trench (TL 97710 14310) in 2001 defined the remains of wooden structures, sealed by thick clay deposits, at both sites.<1>
In the area of the new lake, the principal feature consisted of two E to W aligned rows of posts (F1 and F2), c.3m apart, stretching across part of a former tidal creek. Radiocarbon dating of a wood sample produced a date of AD 920 ± 50 years at one sigma level of confidence. Possible functions include a fish trap or jetty, but observation was too fragmentary to permit a satisfactory interpretation of the structure. In the area of the counterwall, c.600m to the east of the lake, 200m long x 2.1m wide trench was dug. The tops of nine wooden posts (or stakes) (F3) were defined c.0.85-1.05m below ground level, sealed below clay.
