Description

Six trial trenches (165m of trencheing equating to a 3% sample) were excavated in 2005 between Mile End Road and Bruff Close (CBC planning application O/COL/00/1869). The only features observed on the site were several gravely patches, but these were interpreted as natural. The topsoil and subsoil contained a small quantity of Roman ceramic building material and pottery suggesting the site of a Roman building nearby. Peg-tile and floor tiles may have derived from the original church at Mile End which is partially extant to the north of the site.<1>
