Two small trial-trenches (T1 5.1m long and T2 6.4m long, both 1.5m wide and both excavated to 1.1-1.2m deep) were excavated in the garden of 7 Ashley Gardens, Colchester, in advance of the erection of a new dwelling and garage. A probable Roman deposit was recorded in one trench which had been cut by a large ditch which may have been Roman or post-medieval in date. Residual 13th-14th century pottery may indicate medieval activity in the vicinity. <1>
