Description
In 1936 Messrs Sainsbury made alterations in the garden second west from the 'Red Lion'. A foundation trench cut along the east side of the extension revealed the foundations of three Roman walls. The first, about 3ft from the surface, was 2ft from the building line of Culver Street, and only 1ft wide. Nine feet north of it, 2ft 9" from the surface lay another 2ft thick. The third was 19ft north of the second, again about 3ft from the surface, but only 1ft thick. All ran east-west., roughly parallel to Culver Street, and the spaces between them had been floored with clay, at 3ft 6" from the surface. The trench cut was only 4ft deep, so what lay below was unknown. These observations were made by Mr E.J. Rudsdale. During alterations to the later premises of Marks and Spencer's in 1936 the remains of a decorated mosaic pavement were observed under the east boundary of the site. <1>
