A trial-trenched evaluation was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in April 1999 prior to development at 64-76 Hythe Hill. Four evaluation trenches, each 15m long x 1.8m wide were excavated, Trench 1 near the street frontage and the others to the rear of the properties. Well preserved remains of 15th/16th and later buildings were uncovered close to the surface near the Hythe Hill frontage. These overlay extensive dump layers and pits, with a range of finds dating from the 13th to the 15th centuries. More pits were located to the rear of the frontage area, although the evidence diminished further away from the street.<1> Colchester Museum Accession number COLEM 1999.69 <2> Note that the southern half of the site was not evaluated (not required), which was composed of a high mound of compacted industrial waste. The northern part of the site was a disused and overgrown carpark. The work was followed by a small excavation (ECC2590) of the new footings along the street frontage in 1999.<3>
