Description

Workmen engaged in cutting a pipe trench reported a find of two Roman cremation urns under the pavement adjacent to 15-17 The Avenue and a bungalow then under construction. The site was visited and the finds collected. The finds spot was noted and part of the north face of the trench sketched. There were two apparent layers: a brown sandy loam topsoil about 0.5m deep which gradually merged with the underlying reddish brown stony sand exposed to a depth of 0.4m (probably natural). The pots lay in the sandy loam about 0.45 from present ground level. According to the workmen the pots were removed from the centre of the 0.7m wide trench although there was no discernible cut in the section. <1>
