Description

Wire's diary 23/5/1856 records, ' A pavement made with red tesserae was discovered in laying a drain down Mr Hitchcock's back way, Culver Street. As the trench for the drain was very narrow there was no means of ascertaining the size of it. The master informed me that in one part it was considerably worn as if by a deal of traffic on it' (There is a sketch plan showing the position as about opposite Bank Passage). <1><2>
