Description

A total of ten boreholes were drilled at the site of a proposed indoor swimming pool on land off Cowdray Avenue. Depths of borings varied between 12ft. and 30ft. The stratification revealed topsoil varying in thickness between 6in.and 1ft.6in. Overlying alluvial clays between 1ft.3in. And 3ft.6in. Thick. This was underlain by river gravels at around 15.5 to 18.3m A.O.D. which overlay London Clay at levels between 6.0 and 17.1m A.O.D. Standing water levels were measured in existing wells on the allotments and were 17.04, 17.34 and 18.30m A.O.D. in December 1969. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. <1>
