Description

Two boreholes were drilled using the conventional shell and augur method on the site of a proposed development at 19 St Peter's Street. At the time of the survey the site was occupied by a filling station and numerous manholes were visible. Both boreholes revealed similar ground conditions consisting of made ground over river terrace gravel underlain by London Clay which overlay Woolwich and Reading Beds. A layer of concrete about 150 mm thick covered the open areas of the site. In borehole 1 it had been casy upon brick rubble whilst soft to firm clay with brick fragments, ash and some pieces of pottery were encountered beneath the concrete in borehole 2 and beneath the rubble in borehole 1. This fill extended to approximately 2.3m beneath the surface. A layer of sand with pockets of peat and some pieces of bone was encountered from 2.3 to 2.6m in borehole 1. This was also thought to be made ground. Sandy gravel was revealed beneath the made ground in both boreholes the lower horizon of which was found at 3.4 and 3.6m in boreholes 1 and 2 respectively. About 500mm of silty clay with partings of sand and gravel was encountered beneath the river gravel and this was though to be a transition between the terrace gravels and London Clays. <1>
