Description

A detailed site investigation was carried out at No.1 Friars Close to determine the cause of structural damage to the property. A series of field pits were excavated and extended by hand borehole to yield subsoil information at depth. A sandy clay fill was proved to overly the area to depths of f between 370mm and 970mm, containing much builders debris. Trial pits 1, 2 and 4 then encountered a soft clay which was thought to be remains of a superficial sheet of derived material such as hill wash. Beneath this was the London Clay. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.<1>
