Description

Two boreholes and three trial holes were excavated on the site of a proposed extension to the multi-storey car park at Nunn's Road. The boreholes were drilled to a depth of between 10 and 20m using a light shell and auger drilling rig. The trial pits were excavated to a maximum depth of 3m by a rubber tyred backhoe. A standpipe piezometer was installed in borehole 2. The area had been previously levelled and was in use a an area of hard standing. Ground conditions were relatively consistent in the test holes with a succession of sands and gravels overlying stiff clays. The succession can be summarised as; fill over sand and gravels which were in turn underlain by London Clay. In all the trial holes between 2.05 and 2.8m of variable fill was encountered. In test pit one there were reinforced concrete segment partitions running across with a 150mm concrete floor at the base. This is clearly some form of building and possibly represents an old infilled cellar. The London Clay was found at a depth of 12.5m in Borehole 1.<1>
