Description

Four boreholes were drilled on the proposed site of a sheltered housing development. Light cable percussion techniques were employed together with 150mm diameter temporary casing and the boreholes were drilled to depths of 10.45m (Bhs 2 and 3) and 15.45m (Bhs 1 and 4) below existing ground level. The boreholes revealed that a 0.5m deep topsoil covered most of the site except at Borehole 3 where there was 1.5m of fill present comprised sand and gravel with occasional brick rubble. Beneath the topsoil/fill was a glacial clay which overlay the London Clay in which all the boreholes terminated except for BH 4 in which silt was present below 15.0m. Standing water was recorded in borehole 1 at 2.7m depth.<1>
