Description
A hand augur was sunk through the base of a three metre deep excavation trench in an attempt to located the top of the sand and gravel strata. The soils exposed in the trench consisted of 'firm Roman fill traditionally found in this area'. The augured hole penetrated some 1.4m below the base of the trench but Roman fill was encountered for the full depth of the augured hole and no sand strata was encountered.<1>
