Description

Six boreholes were drilled to determine the nature and stratification of the sub-soils in connection with the design of a proposed development at Sheepen Road for the General Post Office. The stratification revealed by the borings was made ground or topsoil overlying alluvial clays and sands of variable thickness between 8ft and 25ft below the surface. The alluvium was underlain by river terrace sand and gravels in five of the boreholes at depths of between 8ft and 25ft below the surface. This sratum was also of variable thickness and was underlain by London Clay. The made ground was only evident in one borehole at the north east corner of the area investigated. Fill had been placed here (Victorian rubbish dumping? (see ECC65).<1>
