Description

A total of seven boreholes were drilled along the line of a proposed sewer related to the Inner Relief Road and running between St Botolph's corner and the River Colne. The boreholes revealed a similar profile which can be revealed as topsoil or made ground over gravel and sand which in turn was underlain by the London Clay. The exception to this was in borehole 7, next to the River Colne, where the London Clay was overlain by a sandy clay beneath the made ground. Observation wells were installed in each of the boreholes and water levels were measured in the standpipes at regular intervals. Depths of the water table measured between 6 feet below ground at borehole 2 and 26 feet below ground level at borehole 5. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.<1>
