In addition to the eleven boreholes a trial pit was excavated. Boreholes 1, 2 and 3 were drilled along the line of the proposed Balkerne Hill cutting and revealed made ground to depths of between 4.30 metres beneath ground level opposite the Balkerne Gate to 1.75 m beneath ground level at the northern end of Balkerne Hill.
