Description

Three boreholes were sunk by shell and augur methods and four trial pits were dug by mechanical excavator at the site of a proposed development for a three-storied, steel framed office building block. Boreholes 1,2 and 3 revealed fill material to depths of between 1.10 and 1.4 metres although borehole 3 also revealed a layer of sandy clay with oyster shell fragments, gravel and peaty material at 2.90 metres. These deposits were underlain by layers of silty clays and sand and gravel which in turn were underlain by what appeared to be London Clay. Trial pit 1 revealed fill down to a level of 2.7 metres beneath the surface. The lowest levels of fill contained shells and bone. Trial pits 2 and 3 included fill with shell down to 3.1 metres and 3.4 metres respectively. Trial pit 4 contained fill down to 3.0 metres. <1>
