Description

Ground investigation were undertaken on the site of a proposed development at the junction of Hythe Hill and St Leonard's Road, Colchester. The site had been previously used as a petrol station and had been levelled in the main area. The fieldwork comprised the drilling of two boreholes by conventional shell and augur methods. The ground conditions revealed by both boreholes were reasonably consistent. Made ground comprising topsoil containing concrete and brick fragments were recorded to a depth of about 1.00m in both boreholes. Sandy gravel was encountered below this to depths of between 3.7 and 4.5m. This overlay the London Clay in Borehole 2. Water was noted at 3.4m depth but as the borehole had collapsed this must be viewed with caution. <1>
