Description
A total of 14 trial pits were opened as part of a geotechnical investigation on land at Essex Hall, which was due to be redeveloped for housing. The site had seen previous use as the Essex Hall Hospital. The pits revealed surface subsoils consisting principally of sandy gravel varying in thickness from 0.3 metres to 1.5 metres. This overlay a silty clay which was proved to over 10 metres below the ground surface. The uppermost strata consisted of fill material to a depth of approximately 0.5 metres. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted<1>
