Description

Site investigations were carried out on a site where it was proposed to construct new civil offices for the Borough Council. The site is situated at the corner of West Stockwell Street and the High Street. The purpose of the investigation was to determine ground conditions. Three boreholes were drilled using conventional shell and augur methods. The boreholes revealed that the general sequence of buried strata on the site consisted of made ground overlying sands and gravels (probably of glacial origin) and London Clay (lower Eocene epoch). The made ground comprised two thick layer, the upper layer being 0.6 to 0.7 metres thick. This comprised flexible surfacing overlying brick rubble in boreholes 1 and 2, and overlying loose sand and gravel in borehole 3. The lower made ground was obviously of greater age, and extended to a maximum depth of 3.2 metres in borehole 1. It comprised very loose clayey gravely sand with pieces of brick, concrete and chalk in borehole 1. In borehole 2 the lower fill comprised stiff grey gravely silty and clay with pieces of brick, chalk, slate, bone, and shell to 2.4 metres followed by some silty clay and sand and gravel with some pieces of brick. In borehole 3 the fill was soft silty clay with pieces of brick to 1.7 metres followed by loose gravely sand with pieces of brick to 2.70 metres. In each borehole the made ground rested on sands and gravel which extended to 14 metres deep in borehole 3, 15.5 metres deep in borehole 2. These depths corresponded to levels of 12.33 to 13.70 metres AOD. Groundwater stood at between 13.8 and 14.0 metres below ground level.<1>
