Description

Three boreholes and four trial pits were excavated as part of a geotechnical site investigation on land along Crouch Street and adjacent to the South Way roundabout. At the time of the survey the site was being used as a temporary gravel surface car park. The excavations revealed that made ground was present over approximately two thirds of the area. This consisted of grey dirty clayey soil with brick fragments present in it to a depth of between 1.5 metres and 3.35 metres. In parts of the site a firm grey to brown clay was present beneath the made ground. This was also regarded as probable made ground. A trial pit excavated on the known site of a demolished house revealed demolition rubble to a depth of 2 metres. This demolition is assumed to be contained within a basement. In places a uniform layer of sand was found separating the made ground from the underlying gravel. The top of the gravel deposit varies between about 2.7 m and 3.45 m below existing ground level and was proved to be around 6.5 metres thick. The gravel overlay London Clay which was present at a depth of 9.5 metres. Water was observed at depths of 6.35 metres and 7.30 metres below the ground surface. No site plan available. <1>
