A geotechnical site investigation was carried out on land off Whitehall Road where it was proposed to build a number of industrial units. The site was believed to have been covered in sand/gravel in 1970 without prior removal of the topsoil but the three shell and augur type boreholes revealed topsoil overlying sand, which overlay sand and gravel at between 0.2 and 0.9 metres beneath the surface. This sealed what was taken to be London Clay found at between 3.4 and 7.8 metres below the surface. There was no indication of a buried topsoil.<1>
