Description

A soil survey was carried out on various sites within the Dutch Quarter where it was planned to construct community housing a part of Colchester Borough Council's Dutch Quarter Scheme Phase 2. At the time of the investigation the site was used as a car park. Three boreholes were excavated using an Augur drilling rig and four trial holes were excavated using a mechanical excavator. The investigations indicated that 'made ground' overlay river terrace? deposits of peat and gravel which in turn overlay a clay which is probably the Eocene London Clay. Made ground was found to occur to depths of between 1 and 2 metres and generally had inclusions of rubble/brick rubble followed by organic material and shell.<1>
