Description
Five boreholes were excavated on land of Francis Way on the site of a proposed housing development. The site could be divided into two areas according to soil conditions. Borehole 1, 2 and 3 revealed a 0.6 m layer of topsoil overlying a silty gravel with a clay found at a depth of 1.2m. Boreholes 4 and 5 were positioned in a 350mm depression which ran along the back of the site and revealed 0.2m thickness of topsoil over a 1.0m thick band of sand and gravel which sealed a silty clay. This in turn overlay a mixture of brown clay and gravel at a depth of 2.7m. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.<1> A single borehole was excavated on land off Chaplin Way where a single building was proposed. The borehole showed a depth of 0.3m of topsoil overlying very soft sand. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.<2>
