Description

Two trial holes were excavated at the rear of Nos. 14 and 15 West Stockwell Street where it was proposed to develop the site with low rise housing units. The trial holes were excavated within a relatively flat car parking area at the rear of 15 West Stockwell Street. In each case light, orange/yellow sand was found beneath extensive deposits of 'fill' material which was of widely varying thickness. No water was encountered. Trial hole 1 revealed dark brown 'fill' to a depth of 1.7 m beneath the surface. The fill contained brick fragments which became less frequent with depth. Some bone and shell fragments were also encountered. Trial hole 2 revealed dark brown/black 'fill' to a depth of 2.65 metres. This 'fill' contained a section of brickwork on the north edge of the hole to a depth of 0.5 metres beneath which there was occasional oyster shells and brick fragments becoming slightly less frequent with depth.<1>
