Description
Two trial holes were excavated on the former Rose Printers premises along Kendall Road. The original building was built with a full basement and there was much over site concrete remaining. One of the trial holes was excavated inside the building plan where beneath the concrete the site is covered by layers of compact fill up to a depth of 1.6 m below floor level., sitting on top of compact sand. The second hole was hand excavated at the rear corner of a gable wall to try and determine the reason for some settlement. Beneath a thin over site layer of concrete and tarmac the soil was soft, dark and wet to a depth of 0.7 metres. This was felt to be due to a leaking rainwater pipe gulley. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.<1>
