Description

A trial hole was excavated as part of the Dutch Quarter Phase 1 housing scheme. The hole was dug on the site of an old timber-framed, open sided barn with a concrete floor slab. The trial hole revealed clay at a depth of 1.1m below ground level. It was observed that the clay strata is inclined and is probably at a greater depth below ground level along the Maidenburgh frontage, (possibly 2.5m below ground level). Overlying the clay was approximately 0.7m of 'Alluvial fill' (presumably made ground). An exploratory excavation indicated a filled cellar below the slab. The hole was dug 1.5m below ground level into the loose rubble brick fill, and did not determine the depth of the cellar. The hole was abandoned.<1>
