Description

Six trial holes were excavated around a site which straddled Maidenburgh Street with a frontage on George Street and Ryegate Road. Trial holes 1 and 2 were in the filled in Castle ditch (see EVCC1817). Trial holes 3a and 3b were located in an open yard and revealed 2 metres of 'alluvial fill' (presumably this means made-ground), which was saturated and contaminated with diesel oil. It was thought that this may be a result of trapped surface water failing to evaporate. Trial hole 4 had 'similar characteristics' to the fill over the ditches but was more silty and contained flints and 'old' tiles. There was a filled in pit in one corner of the hole with large air pockets. Trial hole 5 contained various infill materials over a band of oyster shells which, according to the engineer marked the level of the old Roman floors'. Underneath the shells was a layer of light brown 'hogging' material (which was moist) overlying mottled gravely clay.<1>
