Description

Observations of archaeological remains were made during the construction of the Mercury Theatre in 1970. The observations were recorded onto an engineering plan of the proposed groundworks for the new theatre. From the handwriting on the plan it would appear that observations were made by Ros Niblett (pers comm. Martin Winter 15/12/99) and included robber trenches, one or more tessellated pavements, wall plaster, Boudican destruction levels, walls and gravel metalling 2' thick. The fact that some of the stanchion holes are recorded as blank may suggest that not all the excavations were observed.<1>
