Description
Morant records ' near half a very fine and elegant (pavement) was discovered, 12th May 1763, on the north side of the High Street, in a garden belonging to Mr John Bernard, apothecary and chirurgeon, late part of a yard of the Falcon and Queen's Head Inn… Mr Bernard hath enclosed and covered it, in order to preserve it...an exact drawing of it was engraved and delivered with Lexden Hundred, when that part of the History of Essex was published' also that 'near this was found either part of the same or another, when a stable was pulled down, which was supposed to be an old Roman building'. <1> A drawing of the pavement by Dunthorne, a local artist, is reproduced in Morant and Hull (Plate XXIII, A) <2> See also Cromwell <3> and others <4><5><6><7><8><9>
