Description

Stage two of the archaeological evaluation of the Colchester North Station Car Park Extension was carried out in November 1995. The first stage was undertaken in March 1993 (see ECC1983) and focused on the central and western areas of the site. The second stage dealt with the remaining eastern area and matters outstanding from the 1993 work. Two trenches were excavated by machine followed by selective manual cleaning and excavation. The first trench was 6m long x 1.9m wide and 0.8m deep. Its purpose was to explore a small area adjacent to the spot from where the 1993 trenching recovered a piece of possible post-Roman kiln furniture. The east-west orientated trench extended to either side of the earlier trench but nothing of archaeological significance was recovered. The second trench was located on an area of recreation ground, across rising land. The trench was 85m long x 1.9m wide and 0.5m to 0.8m deep. A gravel spread and associated linear cut were noted but contained no datable finds.<1>
