Description
A small-scale archaeological evaluation was undertaken on the site of the proposed Colchester Foyer, a project involving the construction of two linked residential blocks. The first trench to be opened was situated next to the south verge of 62 Priory Street but was found to be riddled with live cables and was abandoned. The second trench was situated 20m to the north in a yard between nos. 59 and 62 Priory Street. Conditions for inspection of the trench were not ideal due to the limited width of the trench (600mm) and soil discoloration.
The most prominent feature to be revealed was a post-medieval, north-south brick-lined passage, which appeared to have been infilled within the last century. No evidence of surviving medieval or earlier structures was encountered and it appeared likely that the exposed cellar and basement had removed all earlier features from at least 45% of the affected Priory Street frontage. <1>
