Description

An evaluation was carried out at the Hole in the Wall pub. Two small trenches were excavated of which only one (trench A) was able to penetrate to the Roman road surfaces at about 1.8m below modern ground level. Roman street metalling was seen in plan and consisted of gravel (sand and medium stone). Sealing this surface was a series of deposits 0.5m thick formed for three main layers which appeared to have accumulated in the late 3rd or earlier 4th century AD. Above this refuse deposit there was a distinct change in the archaeology indicative of cultivation represented by a band of silty loam containing smaller pieces of refuse material. pottery indicated a date of late 4th century (350+) This layer formed the lowest 0.20m of a thick accumulation of cultivated dark sandy loam some 0.7 m deep which contains artefacts dating from the medieval to mid 18th century plus. This cultivated soil was followed by the dumping of building debris dating from the later 18th or earlier 19th century and most likely connected with work associated with the 'Hole in the Wall' public house. The final deposit consisted of a thin gravel metalling, presumably the remain of a former pub yard dating from the earlier 19th century or earlier<1>
