Description

In 1863 a Mr O. Fisher recorded the geology of a brick pit which lay between Colchester and Lexden on the south side of the Colne valley (TL978253). In a part of the pit was a thirty feet wide channel filled with peat and organic clay lying between the brick earth and the gravel. A large number of peat-stained bones and the teeth of mammals (elephants & rhinoceroses) were found, along with rich pollen deposits. <1><2>
