Description
Two exploratory trenches were excavated prior to redevelopment of 19 High Street for a 'Next' retail outlet. One trench was situated in the south - west area of the site just to the north of Culver Street,. This trench was 1.2m x 1.5m and dug to a depth of 1.5m. The second trench was located in the north-eastern area behind what was Dewhurst butchers shop. It was 1.2m by 1.5m and dug to a depth of 1m. The archaeology of the first trench comprised an unrendered wall of unfrogged brick in English Bond construction. It is aligned north-south dividing two cellar areas fronting onto Culver Street and of probable 17th century date. The eastern cellar area had been backfilled in the 18th century and contained a large quantity of redeposited Roman material. the western area had been backfilled in the late 18th century with a loose fill containing quantities of brick and mortar debris. Beneath the modern yard metalling within trench two, layers containing a large quantity of demolition debris were encountered dating from the late 18th century to modern. Set within this and aligned north-south among the eastern trench section a series of slight and disjointed brick foundations indicate a former building from which much of the upper debris derived. This overlay further material mixed with 18th century debris but containing a proportion of redeposited Roman material. Earlier building on the site is evidenced by a mortar stone and tile plinth which projected into the north-east corner of the trench indicating the corner of a building of probable 16th century date. This had been repaired in the 18th century. A drain, probably 16th century in date, was situated in the west section of the trench. Below these features were layers containing a high degree of sand overlying extensive layers of gravel indicating an area which was occasionally resurfaced, probably a yard. At the base of the trench was a further layer of demolition debris consisting of tile and plaster from a building of probable 14th century date.<1>
