Description

Site visit to inspect an open drain run between blocks H and K at Colchester Institute. Late Iron Age and Roman sherds were recovered from the loose spoil. Also the lift shaft on south end of H block (opposite F Block) was inspected. The cut was 3 metres square and 1.4 metres deep, the top consisted of modern paving slab over sand/topsoil mix make-up. This lay over a medium brown topsoil, which looked and felt post-medieval. There was a gravel layer at the bottom of the cut, but the fact that it sealed yet more of the post-medieval topsoil means it is probably not ancient. The gravel could have been a slump into an underlying feature. <1>
