Description

A hole to allow the planting of a new cedar in Lower Castle Park was hand-excavated by CAT. The hole was north of the break in the wall near the old mess hall (i.e. the break west of Duncan's Gate) and was just on the east side of the path which leads past the lower bowling green and out to Leisureworld. The excavator (Nigel Rayner) reports that the material through which the hole was dug was surprisingly stony, and contained much Roman tile. Finds from the hole included: 2 fragments of Roman brick, 1 fragment of Roman imbrex tile, 2 fragments of tegulae, 3 indeterminate tile/bricks, 1 septaria lump and 1 peg tile. The tree was planted before CAT could sketch the hole. <1>
