Description
A watching brief was undertaken during building work for an extension joining the south and north block of the Northgate centre. In the western footings trench the top of Roman? demolition debris was observed at 1.5m below modern ground surface, also a large pit cutting the edge of a deposit of gravel. In the east trench a huge pit went down to 1.8m cutting a deposit of gravel at about 1.3m down and about 0.8m deep. These two gravel deposits could easily be Roman Road gravel, but could equally be part of a courtyard or alley. There would be a problem fitting other alignments together if this were to be a road. <1>
