Description

A watching brief was undertaken during the laying out of new kerbs and pavements along the High Street. The report notes 'The work was largely surface, so no great depth was reached. Sometimes the work was marginal e.g. outside Markhams (63 High Street) when the breaking of an innocuous slab revealed the alcoves below the shop. The only noticeable hole was directly outside (north of) St Nicholas House (part of Co-op) where there was a reasonable trench to look down. In this was a pink mortuary layer at 0.5m below modern road, which was possibly a layer of opus signinum'.<1>
